Our Last Meeting

With two elections coming up this month our May 3 meeting turned into a candidate’s night.  The election for the BISD board comes up on May 12 so first on the agenda was the school board election.  All five candidates for the board made presentations and answered questions.  Most of the issues raised concerned the planned cutbacks in state funding is promised by Gov. Perry and what impact this might have on the quality of education that the district offers its students.  Other questions brought up the fairness issue--how the fees charged by the district for participation in extra-curricular activities impacts low income families and the changes in the teacher retirement system (TRS) that are being proposed by some politically well-connected persons in Houston would affect the amount that retirees currently receive.  It was a good session and was informative to all in attendance.

Following the Boerne ISD board presentations we heard several other candidates who were in attendance.  First was Daniel Boone, a candidate for the Democratic nomination to run against Lamar Smith this fall.  The other candidate running for this nomination, Candace Duval, also said a few words—she had previously made a presentation to the club.  Patricia Alverez who is running for the Fourth Court of Appeals (Place 3) also talked—mostly about the role of the Court and the need for more balance on the Court.  Rebecca Bell-Metereau running for the State Board of Education also talked about issues concerning the board and how important it was that we place a Democrat on the board.  Rebeca Martinez, who also is a candidate for the Fourth Court of Appeals (Place 7) was also in attendance but had to leave before her opportunity to talk arrived.

With all these presentations, the meeting ran long and was adjourned without holding the business segment of the meeting.
